Part 47 is a General IAS Part presided over by Justice Katsanos at 111 Centre Street, with the courtroom in Room 1021 and chambers in Room 934. Most New York County IAS parts sit at 60 Centre Street, so counsel who default to that address will be in the wrong building. Check the address on your notice before you leave.
Practitioner Warning. Read Before You Appear.
This is a procedurally strict part. Multiple covering attorneys have reported that Justice Katsanos requires real preparation at conferences and will not accept procedural shortcuts that are routine in other parts.
Specific procedural points reported by counsel:
- Orders prepared by paralegals are not accepted. Multiple practitioners have reported that the part will reject preliminary conference orders or stipulations prepared by a paralegal. Plan to have an attorney prepare and submit the order.
- Orders must be prepared on the court's online system. Counsel have been directed to prepare and submit orders through NYSCEF rather than handing up a paper order at the calendar call. Walk-in paper orders, even when all sides agree on terms, have been rejected.
- "All sides agree" is not a substitute for the procedure. One reporting attorney described the judge bringing three counsel into the courtroom specifically to be told (1) the prepared order would not be accepted, and (2) it had to be redone online. The fact that everyone was present and prepared to fill out an order on the spot did not change the result.
- Conferences are run in depth. Expect the judge to ask substantive questions about the case, not just procedural ones. Bring the bill of particulars, the operative pleadings, the procedural posture, and the substantive theory. A directive that says only "appear and adjourn" is not enough.
- Calendar runs heavy. The courtroom has been described by appearing counsel as packed and slow-moving. Plan for the appearance to take longer than a typical preliminary conference. Schedule accordingly. Do not stack two appearances at adjacent times unless you have backup coverage.

Published Part Rules
Source: New York County Supreme Court, Civil Term, judicial assignments and locations listing | Last verified: August 5, 2026
The court's own assignment listing marks the Part 47 rules as forthcoming, so there is no posted set of part rules for this part yet. Until the rules are published, the Uniform Civil Rules and the forms the part has posted are the controlling written guidance. The listing links five Part 47 forms: a Preliminary Conference Order Form, a Compliance Conference Order Form, a Status Conference Order Form, a Stipulation Form, and a Case Assignment and Scheduling Notice. Download the form that matches your conference type and bring it filled out.
Procedure to verify before your appearance
- Use the part's own conference order form. The listing posts a separate form for preliminary, compliance, and status conferences, plus a stipulation form.
- Confirm whether your conference is preliminary, status, or compliance, because the form and the information the part expects differ.
- If a default has been denied with leave to renew, prepare the renewal motion separately. Do not rely on the conference itself to address the default issue.
- Have an attorney prepared to draft and submit any resulting order through NYSCEF the same day. Do not assume a handed-up paper order will be accepted.

What to Expect
Justice Katsanos runs a procedurally strict part. The pattern across reports is consistent. Conferences are not rubber-stamp. Expect substantive questioning. Expect to be sent to the online system for any resulting order. Plan to have an attorney, not a paralegal, prepare any document the part will sign or so-order.
Critical Tips
- Send an attorney who has, and has read, the bill of particulars. The judge has reportedly conferenced cases in depth. A directive that says only "appear and adjourn" will not be sufficient if substantive questions are asked.
- Plan for a longer than usual appearance. The calendar has been reported as packed. Time-block accordingly.
- Have someone available to draft and e-file an order through NYSCEF the same day. The part has rejected paper orders prepared by paralegals.
- Bring the part's own conference order form. The court posts separate preliminary, compliance, and status conference order forms for Part 47, along with a stipulation form. Fill out the right one before you arrive.
- Go to 111 Centre Street, not 60 Centre Street. Part 47 sits at 111 Centre Street in Room 1021, with chambers in Room 934.
Recent Field Notes (Spring 2026)
- Mixed calendar mix. The Thursday Part 47 calendar in Spring 2026 has included construction site personal injury matters, transit authority cases, commercial real estate disputes, and ATIC insurance subrogation actions. Counsel covering should expect that the case immediately before yours and the case immediately after yours may be in completely different practice areas.
- Active outreach calendar. Part 47 carries a steady volume of cases assigned to small and mid size plaintiff firms. If your firm is on the calendar and you cannot send the handling attorney, secure local counsel coverage early in the week. Same day coverage for substantive Part 47 appearances is hard to find.
