Before You Send a Covering Attorney
- Per diem counsel may not attend a settlement conference. The Westchester county rules bar it. Send the attorney with the file.
- Every attorney must be fully familiar with the matter and authorized to agree on the client's behalf, whether attorney of record or of counsel.
- No telephone adjournments. File the application on NYSCEF at least 48 hours ahead.

What to Expect
Justice Squirrell conferences cases himself and sets firm deadlines from the bench, and once a case is trial ready the next step is a settlement conference where per diem counsel may not appear.
Field Notes: July to October 2026
Between July and October 2026, our office appeared at status and compliance conferences before Justice Squirrell in Courtroom 1601. He conferenced each case himself and set deadlines from the bench, including deposition completion dates and a deadline to answer a deficiency letter filed on NYSCEF. In one case he sent disputed records for in camera inspection rather than hold up certification. On October 7, 2026, he issued a trial readiness order and set a settlement conference, which under the county rules per diem counsel may not attend. Those are accounts of specific appearances, not published rules.
