What to Expect

Judge Socorro reviews motion papers personally before hearing from counsel. On discovery motions, she asks if the dispute can be resolved between the parties. If not, she marks the matter submitted. For substantive motions, expect the court to set a briefing schedule and then schedule oral argument, which she conducts on the record in the afternoon, virtually. Plan for potential wait times: her calendar can run well past noon.

Tips

• Discovery motions are collaborative first. Judge Socorro will ask if you've tried to resolve the dispute yourself. Come prepared to discuss whether the parties can reach agreement.
• Substantive motions get briefing schedules. For summary judgment and other dispositive motions, expect the court to set a schedule for supplemental briefing before scheduling oral argument.
• Oral argument is virtual and on the record. Argument happens in the afternoon and is recorded. Have your motion fully briefed before the argument date.
• Calendar can run past noon. This part's calendar can extend well into the afternoon. If you have another appearance, plan accordingly or be prepared to wait.
• Afternoon appearances only. Oral arguments are held in the afternoon. Do not expect morning availability.
