Calendar and Appearance Format
Part IA-11 sits on Thursdays, and all appearances are in person. The Part makes a final morning call at 11:30 a.m. and a final afternoon call at 3:30 p.m., so counsel who arrive after the final call risk a default. The one exception to the in-person rule is oral argument on a motion, which the Part holds on Microsoft Teams at 2:15 p.m.
Preliminary Conferences
Judge Nicolas-Brewster uses separate preliminary conference order forms for non-Labor Law and Labor Law matters. These fillable forms are available on the nycourts.gov Bronx County page, and counsel should complete the applicable form before appearing. No appearance is required on the preliminary conference control date, because the Part generates the Case Scheduling Order automatically.
Compliance Conferences
The Part uses Compliance Conference Orders to track discovery progress. Be prepared to report on the status of all outstanding discovery at every compliance conference.
Per Diem and Covering Counsel
The Part Rules require that any attorney who appears, including a per diem attorney or covering counsel, be fully familiar with the case and carry authority to bind the client. Send someone who has read the file, not someone holding a card.

What to Expect
Part IA-11 is a conference-heavy part. Judge Nicolas-Brewster handles a significant volume of preliminary and compliance conferences, and the courtroom is focused on moving cases through discovery. If you are appearing on a conference, the single most important thing is knowing the discovery status of your case.
Tips
- Discovery status is everything. At every conference, be prepared to report on exactly where discovery stands. What has been exchanged? What depositions are scheduled? What is outstanding and why?
- Use the correct PC order form. There are separate forms for non-Labor and Labor Law matters. Download and complete the correct form from nycourts.gov before appearing.
- Compliance conferences are not formalities. If discovery is stalled, be prepared to explain why and commit to specific deadlines. Do not ask for an open-ended adjournment.
- Know the final call times. The Part makes a final morning call at 11:30 a.m. and a final afternoon call at 3:30 p.m. Build the security line at 851 Grand Concourse into your travel time, because arriving after the final call puts your client at risk of a default.
- Send a covering attorney who knows the file. The Part Rules require any appearing attorney, including a per diem attorney, to be familiar with the case and to carry authority to bind the client. Brief your covering counsel on the discovery posture before the appearance.
- Bronx County culture. As with other Bronx parts, the courthouse has its own rhythm. Allow time for security at 851 Grand Concourse. The calendar may start later than posted, but expect to stay once it gets going.
